FROM CROYDON TO THE UK’S KITCHENS – MP SEES LOCAL PACKAGING FIRM’S GREEN INNOVATION IN ACTION

MP for Croydon West, and Minister for Industry, Sarah Jones, visited Amipak, a family-run business in the heart of Croydon on 6 August.

Welcomed by Josh Friedler, Michael Friedler and Joseph Schwitzer of Amipak, alongside Darren Shepherd from the British Printing Industries Federation, Sarah toured the site to see how the company produces sustainable food packaging for some of the UK’s best-known brands.

The site on Factory Lane employs around 100 staff, and is now run by the third generation of the family, with the original companies being established in the 1950s and merging to create Amipak in 1999.

Some of the UK’s most recognisable brands rely on Amipak for high quality, environmentally-friendly packaging, including household names like Tesco, Sainsburys and Pizza Express.

The visit was also an opportunity to discuss pressing business issues, including Extended Producer Responsibility, high energy prices and the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation.

Michael Friedler, Amipak’s Joint Managing Director, said:

“It was a pleasure to have our local MP come and see the work we do here at Amipak. Sarah was interested and engaged and recognised many of the products we create here for some of the UK’s biggest brands.

It was a great opportunity to share how enthusiastic we are about packaging that’s sustainable – using recycled, recyclable and compostable materials.

It’s vital that Parliamentarians have a balanced view about packaging and can see how the industry is evolving.”

Sarah Jones, MP for Croydon West, said:

“It was great to learn that some of the UK’s most recognisable food packaging is made right here in Croydon! I certainly knew some of the brands, and it was fascinating to see it all coming to life.

“It was especially interesting to see how sustainable materials can be used to create packaging that works – keeping food fresh and protected and reducing food waste, while also being eco-friendly."
